A UNESCO school

Being a UNESCO Associated School is an honour that aligns Earlscliffe with a global network of over 12,000 educational institutions across 182 countries. These schools share a common mission: to build peace in the minds of children and young people. This is achieved by promoting the values of UNESCO—peace, human rights, intercultural dialogue, sustainable development, and quality education for all.

As a UNESCO school, Earlscliffe integrates these values into its curriculum and extracurricular activities, ensuring that our students not only excel academically but also grow as responsible, informed global citizens. This provides our students with unique opportunities to engage in international projects, collaborate with peers worldwide, and participate in events that highlight the importance of global solidarity and shared human values.

The UNESCO impact on our students

At Earlscliffe, we believe that education extends beyond the classroom. Our UNESCO school status enables us to provide a more enriched learning experience, where students are encouraged to think critically about global issues and contribute positively to society. This approach fosters an environment where diversity is celebrated, and students are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate and contribute to an increasingly interconnected world.

Through our UNESCO projects, students will engage in various activities, such as environmental conservation initiatives and discussions on human rights. These experiences not only broaden their perspectives but also instil a deep sense of responsibility towards making the world a better place.

Recent UNESCO activities

This past year alone we have completed the following UNESCO-related activities (amongst many others):

  • Visited Port Lympne Wildlife Park to study biodiversity and learn about habitat loss, rewilding and conservation
  • Participated in the TEDI University and Royal Engineering Academy Sustainability Week
  • Maintained and improved the Earlscliffe bird and squirrel feeding grounds
  • Attended a cultural exchange in Hannover
  • Raised funds for Rwanda Action
  • Held a COP28 simulation event, inviting other neighbouring schools to join us at Earlscliffe and participate
  • Celebrated International Women’s Day with a range of awareness activities

What does it mean to be a UNESCO School?

Earlscliffe has always been recognised for its excellence in educational enrichment, and we are thrilled with our longstanding membership with the UNESCO Associated Schools Network. This prestigious recognition is not only a testament to our commitment to academic rigour but also reflects our dedication to promoting global citizenship, cultural understanding, and sustainable development among our students.

Through concrete actions member schools promote the ideals of UNESCO valuing rights and dignity, gender equality, social progress, freedom, justice and democracy, respect for diversity and international solidarity.
