Earlscliffe Basketball Academy sponsors “Jump with Darbi” high performance Basketball Academy, hosted by Bulgaria’s top professional basketball player – Georgi Boyanov. Georgi has been playing professionally for the past 6 years, for teams in Germany, Iceland, Macedonia, and Bulgaria.
The basketball academy provides an elite sporting environment for young basketball players that combines 6 hours of intensive training each day with another 2 hours of English language lessons. Georgi and his wife Petya Boyanova are all part of “Jump with Darbi” Basketball Academy’s big team on site. “I want young players who are coming up through the ranks to learn from the mistakes I made. I have been playing basketball since I was 13 and it was my entire life” he says, “but I completely overlooked my schoolwork. I thought I could make it with my basketball talent alone.”
Georgi continues to explain that whilst he did earn a full scholarship to play division one basketball at the University of Alabama, he lost out on an even more spectacular opportunity with Georgetown because his grades weren’t good enough. “I was capable academically and could have been a good student from the start. I later graduated with an honours (3.5 GPA). But when I was young, I just didn’t understand that to be successful in life you need to work just as hard off the court, as you do on the court.”
Therefore, the academy now offers students the chance to vastly improve their basketball skills, and their English language ability. In addition, students are presented with the possibility of joining Earlscliffe to secure academic excellence, with British GCSE and A-level qualifications that are sought by universities throughout the world.
The summer academy takes place over 2 weeks with 70 students per week. The coaching team consists of 6 high level professionals who provide skills training, conditioning, cardio fitness and, of course, match-play.
Head Coach, Branko Maksimovic has been coaching high profile teams since 2001, including the national teams of Serbia and Montenegro’s U-20s and Serbia’s U-19’s (both gold-medal winning). Most recently he was the assistant coach for top-tier Russian team PBC Lokomotiv Kuban.
Assistant Coach, Mihail Kapitanov, both coaches and plays point-Guard for national basketball team, the Chemomorets. In his career he has won two national championships and is a silver medallist coach.
